I was quickly fascinated with Jeff Schmuki's Armagarden, and being an avid project-doer, I decided to play copy-cat for this project. I built my own hydroponic garden, which can be seen between the Dujariè casitas (It will be there until we have our first freeze of this winter). The pots are made out of recycled Gatorade bottles, and I used a growing medium of perlite and vermiculite (both synthetic rocks), but the nutrient solution is all organic. The garden itself sits in a plastic bin, but it is positioned next to a natural garden.
I don't have one particular message with this juxtaposition of natural and artificial gardens, but rather, I would like viewers to contemplate it. There are many meditations one could derive from this garden. For instance, isn't is wondrous that with this new science I'll have vegetables in as little as 90 days? That's 25% sooner than a traditional garden!
For my first try at hydroponics, I am attempting to grow habanero peppers, tomatoes, basil and cilantro. These four have yet to sprout. If you notice below, however, I do have one venus fly trap, waiting for friends, "lonely as a cloud"...
