A Friendly Intervention

For my Intimate Public Intervention I decided to use my apartment complex as my public space. I chose a courtyard that a lot of people pass through. My motivation for using this space stems from the dislike I have for uncommunicative residences. I come from a small town in which everyone knows their neighbors, sometimes a little too well, and because I am used to that type of living environment, it bothers me that after a month in my apartment I only have formally met one of my many neighbors. I decided to make the area feel more amiable by inviting others to express themselves as I did. My message to pass on happiness was in hopes that the entire community would then be happier in general, because happiness is contagious.

My materials used were simply flowers and chalk. I picked flowers because they are brightly colored, and therefore pleasing to the eye. Also, flowers are almost always a nice gesture, so there are positive connotations associated with them. I started out by handing a flower off to my roommate, which you can see in the pictures made her smile!
