From the very beginning, we knew that we wanted to make some sort of image that we'd leave for people to find as they went about their normal routine. This peace sign is made out of mulch that surrounded the base of nearby trees, rocks, and acorns. The mulch and acorns were found onsite but the rocks were brought in to the St. Edward's community. In that way, the rocks symbolize the coming together of the campus and the diversity of the student body. The students are what make the outline for the campus, we are the backbone. We really wanted our piece to symbolize unity among people, the community where the piece was constructed, and nature.
Because the peace sign is located near bike-racks it is easy for people to find. But we also wanted to put in a place where it can be left alone and admired over time. This placing is not conspicuous and is, in a way, a special treat for those who happen upon it. Those who do get to see the piece are then able to spread the word to others and thus promote more unity.
