Cat Shrine

Project Outline:

My proposal is to create an area in the Brackenridge Park in San Antonio to make reference to the park committee’s decision to shelter and feed the city’s fixed cats. Currently, an area of the park [1,2] is reserved for food bowls that are filled regularly by the park staff. The area is located in the woods [10], away from the public. Not surprisingly, few people know that the park committee is sheltering cats that otherwise would be euthanized. The Cat Shrine project intends to make the visitors acknowledge the committee’s decision. It consists in creating a thematic area nearby the food bowls that has four major features:

      1)      A central round concrete circle [8] (radius around 5 feet) on which stand five real size stone cat sculptures and four food bowls. Two of the sculptures will emulate cats eating out of the same food bowl. One of the sculptures will be eating out of a food bowl on its own. The last cat sculpture will be sunbathing near the center of the circle.

      2)      By each of the three nearby benches, there will be one real size stone cat sculpture with the following shapes: a) lying under the bench [7]. b) Near the barbecue grill, as if it was asking for food [5]. c) Sitting few feet away from the bench [6].

      3)      Cat footsteps on the concrete sidewalk [9]. The footsteps will follow a long trail; long enough so the central concrete circle will not be visible. The first indication that a visitor is approaching the Cat Shrine then must be the footsteps on the concrete sidewalk.

      4)      A stone cat sculpture resting on the top of the tree [11]
