BC Awareness

For my public intervention, I decided to do something that raised awareness for breast cancer. Breast cancer awareness month is near and it is something that I find to be very important. My grandmother survived breast cancer and this motivates me into raising awareness for everyone else that may not be aware.

Wheat Pasting and Fine Art Photographs

For my public art intervention I chose to work with a tool I am incredibly comfortable with, my Yashica-G camera. It always amazes me how the genre of wheat pasting street art is a field completely dominated by graphic designers and graffiti artists, while photography has for the most part been excluded from the walls of streets. Photographs may be included in street art, but typically don't exist in public as they would in a gallery setting. What I was interested in accomplishing through this project was a fine art approach to photography presented in a street context, a merging of work I have shown in galleries and a less restrictive public arena.

The camera I use is a twin-lens reflex that exposes 120 film.

The film I am using is Velvia Fujichrome. It's a slide film that holds all the colors directly on the positive.

This is the finished result that otherwise would be framed and in a gallery setting.

Mixing some wheat paste with only three secret ingredients.

And pasted it right onto a trashcan that hundreds of students view daily.

Root of Evil

The message I wanted to spread was the corruption of money.  Not only is it the "Root of All Evil", but we are too blind to see how it controls us.

Hottest Summer In Texas

For my public intervention, I decided to play with the idea of how hot it's been in Texas lately. In order to demonstrate how hot it is currently outside, I used three solid ice blocks. I made little people out of the blocks and as they melt it kinda gives off the illusion that they are sweating.

Concrete Jungle

For my art intervention I decided to create a jungle-like scene in an urban setting. The materials I used were plastic animals and plants. These were all placed on and surrounding a light pole in the middle of the night.

A Friendly Intervention

For my Intimate Public Intervention I decided to use my apartment complex as my public space. I chose a courtyard that a lot of people pass through. My motivation for using this space stems from the dislike I have for uncommunicative residences. I come from a small town in which everyone knows their neighbors, sometimes a little too well, and because I am used to that type of living environment, it bothers me that after a month in my apartment I only have formally met one of my many neighbors. I decided to make the area feel more amiable by inviting others to express themselves as I did. My message to pass on happiness was in hopes that the entire community would then be happier in general, because happiness is contagious.

My materials used were simply flowers and chalk. I picked flowers because they are brightly colored, and therefore pleasing to the eye. Also, flowers are almost always a nice gesture, so there are positive connotations associated with them. I started out by handing a flower off to my roommate, which you can see in the pictures made her smile!

Water + Time + Us

The purpose for this project was to document or interpret through any source of art the effect humans are having on planet earth. Especially human’s everyday necessities are damaging earth’s purity. This loss of pureness is interpreted by the water in the project. Each water bag has a greater amount of food coloring which creates a denser color. This meaning that the clarity of ocean waters has been damaged through time. The banner beneath it shows the name of the work of art. The message was spray painted over carved letters. I took a big piece of rope and tied it to the branches of a tree. Then I hung the water bags in their density order.

I chose these elements of water and pureness because I’m a scuba diver. And what differs a good dive from a crappy dive is the clarity of the water and the amount of fish you find in a spot. Through this sport I create a connection and bundle with nature. If humans keep on utilizing the water like we are doing now, scuba diving will be a sport of the past.
